In Boston
Uri Berenguer is in his ninth season as part of Boston’s broadcast team. At the age of 27, he is one of the youngest announcers in the major leagues. A former Jimmy Fund patient at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, he became interested in a broadcasting career after a visit from Red Sox announcer Joe Castiglione. Berenguer attended Boston Latin Academy and Northeastern University and is the nephew of former major league pitcher, Juan Berenguer.
Oscar Báez returns for a sixth season as part of Boston’s broadcast team. He has hosted Conversando de Deportes, a Spanish-language sports talk show in Boston since 2001 and has hosted SBN’s pre-game show for five years. A native of Bani, Dominican Republic, Báez played minor league baseball in the New York Yankees organization, reaching the Double-A level.
Amy Timmerman is in her fourth year as Executive Producer of the Boston broadcast. Timmerman has degrees from Kansas University and Bentley College and fell in love with baseball while watching the Kansas City Royals in the mid-80’s.
Nilson (Junior) Pepén has co-hosted the SBN pre-game show for four years and provides middle inning relief to Berenguer and Baez during every Red Sox home game. Pepén was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and has a law degree from the University of Technologic of Santiago (D.R.).
In Dallas
Eleno Ornelas was appointed as the Texas Rangers Coordinator of Spanish Broadcasting in February 2003. He serves as the producer and play-by-play announcer for all Rangers home and away Spanish radio broadcasts on KFLC 1270 AM. In addition, he contributes to the Rangers’ Hispanic marketing and community initiatives in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Ornelas joined the Rangers Spanish radio broadcast team in 2000 and did both play-by-play and analysis, working with Edgar Lopez, before becoming the full-time play-by-play announcer in 2003. Prior to joining the Rangers full-time, he worked in the sports department for 1270 AM, then KESS. Ornelas began his broadcasting career in this area at KRVA Radio in Dallas in 1993 before joining KESS-AM in 1998. In addition to the Rangers, Ornelas was the play-by-play announcer for the Dallas Mavericks and Texas Rangers . He has covered the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Burn during his tenure with 1270 AM. Ornelas is a native of Juarez, Mexico and was a professional baseball announcer there before coming to Texas. He has an extensive background as an administrator in the Mexican amateur baseball leagues in North Texas, serving as President of the Dallas League from 1993-98.
Gerardo (Jerry) Romo comes to SBN after having spent six seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Douglas, Arizona native served as an executive producer, reporter and writer for a variety of D-backs programming, including the team’s TV shows D-backs Playin’ Hardball, D-backs Playin’ Hardball En Español, and the live pre-game show, D-backs on Deck. Romo was also a broadcaster for the club’s Spanish TV telecasts. From 2004-2009, he was a Spanish radio broadcaster for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns. Romo has a degree in broadcasting from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.
Taylor Schrang is in her second year with SBN. Her first year was spent in Oakland, launching Spanish radio for the A’s. Due to the efforts of her and her team, 2009 was the first year in which all 162 Oakland A’s games were broadcasted in Spanish. Now, she’s moved to Dallas and is working with the Texas Rangers, working again to bring a full schedule of Spanish broadcasting for every Rangers game. In addition to her love of baseball, she also has a strong loyalty to her Alma Mater, Villanova University, where she played as a D-1 athlete for four years and earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Spanish in 2007. Because of this, her favorite team is the Villanova Wildcats, a team she’s been known to pick as the winner in every contest, including the NCAA basketball tournament, the NBA playoffs, the Olympic bobsled races, the Oscars, the Tonys, Time’s Man of the Year, and the Pulitzer Prize.In Los Angeles
Rolando Nichols has 14 years of experience in Broadcast Media as a journalist and news and sports anchor/reporter. Rolando is currently the Spanish voice for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on ESPN Deportes Radio. Before becoming a Major League broadcaster he spent 12 years working for Univision. In 1997 he became the prime-time news anchor for the Univision affiliate in Phoenix. He eventually became the main news anchor for the most watched local newscast in the country at Univision’s flagship Los Angeles station, KMEX-34. As a journalist, in 2005 Rolando received the highest recognition in broadcast media – the prestigious Peabody Award for a special series titled “15% of the population in the United States,” an in-depth look at the past, present and future of the Hispanic community in the U.S.. Mr. Nichols has won the Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in media, a Regional Emmy, and a Gabriel Award among others for his journalistic work. Rolando played professional baseball in the Mexican Summer League before starting his career as a broadcaster. He signed his first professional contract at age 15 with the “Naranjeros”, from his hometown Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. Rolando was part of the Mexico City Red Devils and Veracruz Eagles organizations in the mid 90’s. Rolando is the founder, of the dynamic Center for Education in TV and Radio, a top-of-the-line broadcast training facility and Centro Net Productions, a cutting-edge media production house located in the Los Angeles area. Mr. Nichols holds a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University.
In Oakland
Amaury Pi-González is one of the most recognizable and popular play by play voices in baseball. He is a pioneer in Spanish Sports broadcasting in the Bay Area. Pi-González also called the games in Spanish for the NBA Golden State Warriors from 1992 to 1998. Pi-González has been with SBN since 2009 and is back with the Oakland A’S where he began his career in 1977. In 2000 and 2001 he was the play-by-play announcer for the Caribbean World Series on FOX TV International. His experience also includes sports anchoring for the Telemundo Network. Amaury is the only Spanish announcer to have broadcasted for four different MLB teams, including the A’S, Giants, Mariners, and Angels. Born in Havana, Cuba, he was inducted into the Cuban Sports Hall of Fame and The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame in 2004. Pi-González has called numerous Playoffs and five different World Series, and has been nominated for the Ford C. Frick Broadcasters Award of the Baseball Hall of Fame during the past three years.
Manolo Hernández-Douen is in his second season as the Athletics analyst for SBN. His journalistic career spans 38 years and includes a variety of experiences as a sportwriter, columnist, and sports editor. Since moving to California in 1982, he has covered the NBA and MLB teams for several of the highest-circulation Spanish newspapers in the United States. Hernández-Douen was the Sports Editor for El Nuevo Herald in Miami from 2000 to 2007 and is a Lifetime Honorary member of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA).
Grant Knowles is entering his first full season with SBN. He has taken over as Producer in Oakland after interning under Taylor Schrang in 2009. As an intern, Grant brought not only his wide range of electronic media knowledge but also his passion for all things sport. Grant earned his Bachelors Degree in broadcasting and electronic media from Eastern Kentucky University, where he also captained his D-III rugby team. A native of Cincinnati, Grant cannot separate his love for sports from the great baseball tradition of his home town.In Philadelphia
Danny Martinez is in his fifth year with SBN and the Phillies Spanish broadcast. Born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Martinez was attending Manhattan Community College in New York when he was drafted in 1977 by Dallas Green, Manager of the 1980 World Champion Phillies. Martinez made it to Double A before an injury in 1981 ended his playing career. Since then, he has never been far from baseball, including his time as a scout and as an agent. He was an announcer for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 2003 to 2004 and joined SBN in 2005.
Alberto Polanco has been with SBN for three years as the Media Specialist Chief Editor for Beisbol.net, an announcer and the broadcasting engineer for the Philadelphia broadcast. A native of the Dominican Republic, Polanco has more than a decade of experience in editing and producing audio and video footage for both broadcast and website use. His production and media relations work has been recognized by numerous organizations including the state of New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders, the office of the Mayor Gwendolyn A. Faison’s City of Camden (NJ), the Dominican Unite Culture of Camden County, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Camden County, the Dominican Festival and Parade of Philadelphia.
William Kulik is President of SBN and founded the company in 2001 in Boston. He has played every possible role within the organization, including broadcaster, producer, technician, salesman and developer of new business. Kulik expanded the company to include the Phillies in 2005, the Washington Nationals in 2008, the Oakland Athletics in 2009, and the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2010. Since 2009, the Caribbean World Series has been part of the SBN family, and Kulik travels to the site of the Series with his broadcast crew to bring the games in Spanish to major cities throughout the United States. Kulik is bilingual, travels frequently to the Dominican Republic, and is know by listeners as “El Gringo Malo” in Boston and in Philadelphia, where he serves as Executive Producer.
Rickie Ricardo is in his 4th season with the Phillies broadcast crew. Ricardo is a radio veteran of 30 years in New York, Miami, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Music Choice television. The veteran music programmer and DJ shifted career gears to his first love of baseball in 2007 and has grown quickly within the baseball broadcast community. Richardo has received various awards, and is a member of the New York City Radio Hall of Fame. Ricardo hosts the “Acceso Total” pregame show as well as announces the play-by-play for the Phillies. Ricardo also provides engineering and technology duties for SBN Philadelphia.In Washington, DC
Angel Castillo has been with SBN for three years. A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, he has worked as a sports anchor and daily news reporter for Latin Radio Group in Philadelphia. He has also done sports journalism work for Impacto Newspaper. Castillo started with SBN as a reporter and was part of the Philadelphia team before coming to Washington.
Erica Studler has been with SBN for two years. She serves as the Executive Producer and Account Manager for the Nationals. Erica graduated as a Sports Management fellow from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. She was a member of the University of Maryland Varsity Softball team, and started for team USA softball at the 2007 PanAm Maccabi games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
